Hello! I’m AJ, and I’m the author of four novels set in the 1940s (the first one was Dear Mrs Bird and the latest is Dear Miss Lake). I’m also a very big fan of Old Stuff.
Notes of Cheer is a free monthly round up of things I’ve been writing about, reading or enjoying. I talk about old novels that I’ve just come across or have loved for ever, vintage finds that may sit on a shelf or inspire a whole novel, and links to interesting things that I hope you might like too.
What to expect from subscribing
The aim is that this is a place of cheerfulness - a ten minute read that’s a bit of an escape.
If you want a newsletter once a month which is full of escape into things that might lighten a day, or like reading novels by mid-20th century writers (D.E Stevenson, Winifred Watson, Angela Thirkell and tons more), or understand the power of a good bout of timewasting on eBay to find the perfect vintage promotional calendar that no one else bids for, then I think you may like it here.
I’d love for you to come along with me so that we can have lots of conversations about all of the above, especially the biscuit calendar.
To get an idea of the posts that have been the most popular, this is my latest post and this one has a list of the sorts of books I love. I had loads more brilliant suggestions in the comments for that so I put them into another post here which is a fantastic list.
